What is Visualization?
Imagine at this very moment biting into a slice of sour lemon. What immediately happens ?
For most of us, this image brings forth a flow of saliva! What this example demonstrates is how quickly our mind's image connects to our body's physiology to create a reaction.
This connect of mind to body is the basis of visualization. Through visualization we allow ourselves to experience various images and impact our physiology. For example, imagine standing on the shore of the beach, digging your toes into the wet sand, and feeling the wetness of the ocean. Along with this image your body reacts to emotions that you have associated with this picture. For some, this promotes a relaxation response and generates a physiological response of decreasing the level of stress hormones. Stress hormones like cortisol impact our health by increasing blood pressure, increasing heart rate and by negatively impacting our immune , digestive and respiratory systems.Through positive visualization our physiology responds in different ways that can be beneficial and healing .
